My Subex Experience By Shruti Lokapur

Miss Shruti Lokapur became the first student to be placed this year 2009-10. Here she has shared her unique experience. Department thanks her for this contribution.
                                                                                   more details on interview proceedings
Here I go with my Subex experience.

Well it was not any other company but Subex and hence the placement was bound not to be very easy. They conducted 2 pre-tests on C before the actual interview at Subex Bangalore. There were 11 students shortlisted from our college to attend the interview. It was a pool and there were also students from other colleges attending the interview. When I got to know that I was shortlisted for the interview, I had no intentions of getting into Subex and rather, I wanted to go for it as an experience.

Coming to preparations, I had just scanned through the subjects C, OOPS and Data Structures only. This was all with subjects. Rather I was banking on my listening to lectures in college. But yes, other preparations like working upon my confidence in presenting myself in front of the interviewer, clearly communicating what you want to communicate and knowing some minimum interview etiquettes also helped.

Even though there were no intentions of getting into Subex, I would give my best there and yes, I gave my best and today am going to be a SUBEXIAN

Finally it was 7th Dec. and we were in Bangalore to attend the interview for Subex. There were 3 rounds of technical interviews and 1 round of HR interview to be conducted. It was really a great feeling when we entered the building of Subex in Bangalore. We all were like wow, Subex!!!. Eventually the interviews started.

I got call for 1st round. It was all about my basics. How strong I was with my basics in C, C++, Data Structures etc. mattered. The projects I had worked on and the ones I am working on also had a great share in my interview. Then, there were also questions like, “what are your weaknesses?”, “What is your aim in life?” etc. This went on for about more than half an hour. When it was over, I was really satisfied with my performance and probably this was a great boost for me to move ahead with confidence. Thanks to my friends there who were the real source of confidence to me.

Then it was announced that I was shortlisted for the next round of interview. I was almost sure that it would be the case. There were totally 5 students from our college attending this round. In the next round of interview, it was practical knowledge than theory. I had to explain everything with a diagram or a flow chart. Every question was expected to be answered with a pen and paper. Here there were questions on OS, Networks along with C, OOPS and DS. I was also asked about various projects I had worked on and my contribution in them. I was asked about my aim in life and how Subex would help me in reaching to it. At the end when I was asked if I have any questions, I asked him about my performance. He said, “Well Shruthi, from my perspective you are a best fit for Subex, but let us see, you have two more rounds to go”. That was one moment I would always cherish. I came out and just could not stop smiling. That moment I felt very proud of myself.

Next round started and 3 from our college attended this round. I was called in soon (it was with V.P. of Subex, Bangalore unit). Here it was less of subjects and more of testing our management skills. However, there were questions asked on DBMS, OS and OOPS. I was tested for my team management skills and being a leader. There were some questions to test my attitude and approach when a problem arose. I was asked about my aim in life. When I was asked if I have any questions other than feedback, I preferred to say something rather than asking. I just expressed my impression of Subex to her. Thanked her and left. It was really a great experience talking to somebody who manages the whole Bangalore unit of Subex and trust me it was not easy facing the interview.

Then, it was HR round. Two from our college attended this round. Here I was tested for my patience, my stress taking ability, my communication skills when trying to explain something to people with different levels of understanding. I was given some puzzles to solve. Rather than solving or not solving, it was my approach and attitude that mattered. The thing is with all this brain-storming I never lost patience, never broke-down or showed that I was under stress and probably this is what led to my success in HR interview. I was happier with my technical rounds than HR and hence had a doubt if I would be selected. Thanked him and came out and it was a great relief.

I had the satisfaction of giving my best that day. That is it and the interview was over. I was just thinking if I can ever come back again and walk this way back to Subex when leaving the campus. Left Bangalore and came back to my home (Sharavati hostel, SDMCET). Then, it was a tough time waiting for the results. But still, enjoyed it. Thinking of that interview day, that nervousness, friends wishing each other, calling up to parents and friends after each round and telling them that am moving ahead to the next round, it was awesome. I was ready to accept whatever comes to me.

Finally the most awaited results were out (on 12th Dec, 2009) and I was just too happy to know that I was PLACED. It feels really great on having achieved something like this. This achievement was not easy and I had to be the best at everything there. Having got the glimpse of what success may look like, I can proudly say that “Nothing Succeeds like Success”.

At this point, I should be thanking many people. First of all my parents and my sister for having confidence in me and blessing me, the staff CSE Dept. for their help and support, my friends who were always there for me, some of my seniors who guided me through the interview process. Thank you. It was not possible without you all.

At last, I would just say, believe in yourself and keep moving ahead in life. Be open to criticism and you will continuously grow. All the best.

Recruitment commences: Shruti Lokapur selected at SUBEX

The department congratulate Miss Shruti Lokapur, VII semester for being the first student to be placed this year. She is being selected for Subex company. Hopefully this marks the heralding new trend of more and more students getting placed.
This also reminds me of a time, way back in 2004, when Anagha Paranjape became the first student to be campus recruited by Mindtree. It  was a welcome development then as the previous year's recruitments were affected by 2001 dotcom bust. With that began a spree annual of campus recruitment by companies such as Infosys, Wipro, Mindtree and many more. Of course that was punctuated by recession in last two years. Now it looks things are changing.

Department welcomes this new trends and hopes everyone finds a placement.

Fresher's Day 2009: A Fantastic Event

It was one of such evenings which in its “happenings “go many miles beyond your widest expectations. I am talking about today's  fresher’s day that was arranged for the newly admitted first year students. Thanks to Prateek Shetty, I was made one the judges for event along with Prof. Kamalapur from Electrical Engineering department and Prof. Tejaswini Bhagawat, from Civil Engineering department. The function started at 4 .30pm. Ever since I accepted the invitation, I was cursing myself for accepting this drudgery.

But once the program started, every bit of apprehension was replaced by delightful evening of very interesting events. A total of 9 classes i.e A-I division students showcased their talents of various forms. Our work of assessment of events as judges was divided into determining winners in three categories: best MOC, best performance and best overall class.

Each class showed its best talent in a very colorful manner. The C division was best in overall performance. It got almost full marks for each event and was bale to entertain audience to the full. The best MOC prize went to Division I.. Using the idea of puppet show, they made MOC an impressive item of their whole show. There was a tough competition in best performance category. The amazing Akbar of D division delivered a great piece of solo dance which made audience to shout “once more” which he obliged very promptly. An equally amazing but well co-ordinated skit by F division won te finall approval of judges. Titled “ Dostana Bollywood” the skit was so nicely conceived, crafted and performed that, it may take stay in the minds of audience for long time to come. Each of actor in the skit was perfect “fit” and appeared have practiced a lot to bring put such a comprehensive show. In sum, it was great evening spent on wholesome entertainment.

With this event , every first year new entrant  remains fresher any more.  But he or she has become a proud member of SDMCET family. Welcome again

Invoking Innovation: Intellectual property Rights event Planned: Seeking your suggestions

These are days of innovations. Innovators are ruling business; driving economy and prospering companies. Be it Google’s search algorithm or Guruji’s propriety search system or even Zimblee’s a patent pending self-service digital advertising platform are all but examples of productive innovations at work.
As such it has become imperative for engineering college to prepare its students for innovative world. However a sustainable innovative world demands a system for protection of innovator’s invention. Such a system of protection is generally known as Intellectual property Rights or IPR. SDMCET has set up a IPR Cell to help educate its stakeholder on issues of IPR.
IPR Event Planned for 05-09-2009
IPR Cell @ SDM has planned an IPR event on 5th Sepetmber, 2009 and the focus of the event is students. We have tentatively planned the following sessions.
  • Session on Basic IPR
  • Session on student research and how it benefits students in their career and personal growth
  • Session on importance and use of patent literature
  • Inviting students to submit their inventive ideas and screen the same and select say 5-8 good ideas prior to the event. Resource persons could present their quick view on best form of protection and further steps needed to commercialize the same.
  • A student presentation giving their perspective on conducting research and the inventing process could also be included.
  • (Tentative) a session on invention related to teaching may be included. An example may be US3,382,592 “Apparatus and method for teaching handwriting to children”.
  • A panel on a relevant topic

Seeking Your Inputs:

In this regard, we request you all to send your comments, suggestions. Your experience in industry may help us fine tune this

At SDM Since 1987: Twenty Two years at SDMCET

It was this day in 1987. I came to Dharwad to join as a computer operator in the department of Computer Science and Engineering. At that time CSE was part of E & C department headed by Prof. B N Devraj and Principal Prof. G.Purushothama. The CSE department had just started B E in computer science and engineering affiliated to Karnatak University, Dharwad and the first batch had just completed first year and had entered department for thier second year. The current BSL( Basic Skills Lab) was the computer centre housing 7-terminal NELCO system running on Unix OS.
The first assignment given to me was to set up login account creation for students and then class strength was just 27. Pascal was the programming language.
Immediately after the joining, I was sent for a training on UNIX system at NELCO, Mumbai. Thus began my professional career, since then I have undergone a number of training and presented papers in various conferences. I have visited to countries such as Nepal, Singapore, Scotland, Switzerland and visited homes of many alumni in those countries: Rasika Deshpande ( in Orlton, Switzerland, Harish Katti , Singapore, Nikhil in Kathmandu Nepal) to name few. It has been great experience and eventful 22 years in this esteemed institute.

Priyanka Shetty(2009) Ventures into Teaching

Dear Sir,
I am happy to inform you that i have been working for the past 1 week. I am now a lecturer/assistant professor for BSc(IT) students in Anna Leela College in Mumbai. I have already taken 10 classes. I teach them 2 subjects Introduction to Information Science and Digital Computer Fundamentals. They cover subjects like Computer Organization,Networks ,Microprocessor and such topics. My students are learning quick and enjoying my class.

The joy at the end of the class when my students solve the problems by themselves is really something huge. I have been teaching them like they are small kids,so i start from the basic and make them understand. I have always liked your teaching sir,so like how you used to teach us with latest information and with the examples,I too teach them by giving examples of the latest technology. I have to go just 4 days a week that too for 2 to 3 hrs a day. But the preparation before the class is the hard work. I make sure i study from 3 to 4 textbooks before i teach them. I am not missing college life now i feel I'm back to college. The pay too is good.

All in all I am really happy. I had a technical interview where there were 10 to 15 people who were interviewing us.There were experts on various topics and members of the Mumbai University Board present for the interview.I answered all the technical questions they asked me as they asked about my project. The next day they tell me that out of the 30 to 40 people they interviewed they liked only 3 of them and i was one of them. That was one of the happiest days of my life. They have asked me to think about further studies and i have assured them that i will do my masters.
I have always enjoyed teaching my younger cousins and my friends, but i never realised this could be a good career option for me.But now i don't want to ask for anything better. Thank you sir for being such a good teacher. All my student life i have had a favourite teacher in the different schools i studied,in college you were one of them.I will contact you when i need any help if its OK sir.

Thank you again sir,

In Forum with Former Students

It was one of great days in recent times. I was to meet many of my former students in one of Bangalur's best known landmark FORUM. Since, I am here in Bangalore for a month long training on e-learning and e-teaching , I had thought of meeting some of my former students on weekends. With the help of always helpful Vivek Kamath(2008) this was to come true today. As planned, I left IIITB ( where I am staying for training) at about 9.3o am and reached Forum by 10.15am. Just before, I started, Brahmachaitany, a 2006 passout had called me saying that he was also just leaving home and would be reaching the Forum by 10.30am and he did. For about an hour or so, we chatted over many things- his job, company, future prospectus etc. We did strolled through forum and had coffee. Although many had promised to come, no one appeared there even by 12.oo NOON. I was getting worried. Then all of a sudden started the inflow of students. First came Tejaswini(2008) and Sweta(2008), followed by Naumaan(2009) . Promod Wadappi joined us and sent sms to Bipin and Nagaraj. Closely followed Vicky Adhikari (2004) and Anshul. Slowly but surely we were having encouraging numbers. At about 1.30pm we decided to move to restaurant for lunch and it was Vicky Adhikari who led us to a great dinning place. Next one hour was all but having food and talking to each other. Mean while, Anusha Shetty(2006) and Giridhar(2006) joined us in the hotel. While Anusha made a hurried return, Giridhar stayed for longer. We returned to Forum again and happy to find few more students : Aditya Agarwal, Akshata Kulkarni. Then we waited a long for the arrival of Keerti Kulkarni who joined us at almost 3.30pm. Still more surprising was the arrival of Karthik, who passed out from Mechanical department. I was not able to recall his name, later I recalled that he was a volunter for one of the cultural event for which I was in charge. In the end we had another round of coffee and disbursed. May be we meet other alumni next week.

Candle Light Farwell: A Class Act by Batch'06

Farewells are recurring feature in college life. But they are not repetitions. Every year the ingenuity of organizers make them more refreshing and for that reason are always eagerly awaited. Today's farewell'09 was worth the wait. It took almost a week's time get permission to organize this .Sometimes many of us feared that we might not get permission at all. But when they did get the permission, the batch 06 showed that they to can bring something special for the ocassion.

For most of the part evening, I was personally feeling that this year's send off looked lackluster affair compared to last year's. Although it started on a sober note, it picked up so well that I changed my feeling very soon and started enjoying. The games offered for seniors and their sequence was superb. The distribution of mementos in phases ( an example for division of labor lesson learnt in M & E) left no one yawning.

But the culmination of the evening, the candle light event was best of all and it was indeed a surprise which I guess every senior enjoyed wholeheartedly.

Thanks Batch 05 for wonderful work manifested through Bidaai

It was last year (2008), that we ( myself and my friend Aparna Bhat of ISE Dept.) had sent a paper to Sukriti (Paper Presentation Competition), at BVBCET, Hubli and were very much disappointed that it was not even selected for presentation leave aside the prize…
This failure of last year is what made us strong. And this time, we decided that we should be winning there in BVBCET and we are happy to say that we did it. We bagged 2nd prize at National level Paper Presentation Competition (in Networks Stream). And it was not only in BVBCET, we also managed to win prizes at the State Level Tech Fest, Technomania2k9 in UBDTCE (2nd Prize), and at National Level Tech fest, Wiztec 2009 in GMIT (3rd prize), at Davangere.

The paper is on “Avoiding Accidents as Road Intersections Using the Concept of IP Surveillance.” It is our own proposal, our own idea, which we are proud to say…

The feeling of having successfully executed a plan and also getting the results as expected is great… It is like you know what is going to happen to you… We have learnt to be OPTIMISIC in spite of failures in life… It is rightly said “failures are the stepping stones of success”… Even though it is not a great achievement, but the lesson we have learnt out of it is priceless…

We had worked hard for this and we have done it… Great sense of satisfaction… More than winning prizes, this journey of three days (2nd Apr, in BVBCET, 3rd Apr, in UBDTCE and 4th Apr, in GMIT) has enriched our experience of learning process and we have learnt a lot in these days…

I would like to thank my teammate and one of my best friends, Aparna for everything… Thank you Aparna…

It was not possible without the help of the faculty members of CSE and ISE Dept. and some of our seniors who encouraged us and assured us that our idea is worth presenting. Thank you all.

Yelling for Yashmin

Before today, I never imagined that an accident could be so sudden and so brutal and so devastating. Yes, I am mourning the death of Yashmin, who until later afternoon today was alive, walking with her classmate and in a brief moment fell into her friend's agonising hands and slipped away from our world, forever. I feel doubly sad because fate didn't give her even a second to realise that she was ending her life in next split second. I don't even pray heaven, for it has shown its ugliest face ever.

mingleboxER speaks to us

Mr. Nikhil Kulkarni- Manager Key Accounts, Minglebox made a very interesting, impressive and engaging presentation to our students today. He packed his lively presentation with his personal anecdotal references, be it his travel with American students across India or his interview with a bollywood star. Our students identified him as one among themselves- for Nikhil Kulkarni is just 24 years old but seems to have seen so much of personal exploration and professional exposure. He advised students to set target for a 30 year career- divided into 6 test match format -each test running for 5 years. He advocated for a five year stay with any one company because that helps in understanding crucial aspects of company, industry. He advised students to
  1. experiement heavily in the first 3-5 years of career as it may help them identifying their "real passion" and build a career around it.
  2. Find a mentor who can show them the possible "futures" and lead them to there.
  3. to remain grounded to realities all the time, it is OK to get excited for some time- but get back to realities at the earliest
  4. Think big- keep focusing on how big can your idea or project become
  5. Find out career models - think and act like them
  6. later part of the presentation he covered more technical aspects such as Web 2.0 and how to go about product managements with illustrations. Finally he spoke about personal initiative- http://wegetahead.blogspot.com/ which is offering mentoring for needy people in north karantaka

In all the talk was refreshing, containing wealth of experiences and more. Thanks Nikhil

Where Does Management Fit in With Engineering Career?

Engineering students in general fail to appreciate the importance of management discipline in their "future" career and as a student regard management course as something "foreign" and an "unrelated" to the chosen profession. This attitude of course is understandable given their parochial exposure to real world. As a student you might also have entertained such an attitude and within a short span of time after entering the world of work, you might have felt that " I should have taken management course bit seriously for my own benefit."
Students are always students and the current batch of students(2009-10) who will be studying a course in Management & Entrepreneurship are no different. However they are lucky in a sense to have alumnus like you who can help them change this (rather undesirable) attitude by way of advice, anecdote etc. So kindly tell your juniors what is the "Importance of Management in Engineering career?". More specifically you may describe one or more management principles you came across in working life that you can relate back to management course that you studied ( say annual appraisal meeting etc) and impress upon them. Please put your inputs as comments to this post
